I tried to get some work done today, but was mostly distracted by news reports of a helicopter going down on the way to an oil rig. One of the men aboard was the brother-in-law of a friend.
I trimmed a cat dish-to-be, and made a little jar and lid with the porcelain left over form the soap dishes, and that was as far as I could get. A report came on CBC radio, saying they’d found one survivor and one body, but there were still sixteen men missing. I tried to throw a mug, but it fell apart, and I gave up there.
As of a few hours ago, they’d recovered two life rafts, but they were empty. I don’t think they’ll find anything else. It’s a stormy day, and the odds of surviving both the crash and the ocean are low.

My name is Maaike Charron, and I'm a potter in St. John's, Newfoundland. I started fiddling around with pottery in summer 2006, when I was told volunteering in the local clay studio would get me free studio time. I mostly taught myself, spending a lot of time poring over books, magazines and websites, and occasionally pestering the more advanced (but very helpful) potters around me with questions. After about two years, I decided I'd gotten good enough to go into business for myself. This blog, started after my first big craft fair, was created to document the process of becoming a wondrously succesful craftsperson. (Or it will document How Not To Do It. We'll see.)
