Today and tomorrow are the last days before the big craft fair in St. John’s. My last glaze firing is in the kiln now (907 degrees Celsius! Only another 300 and change to go!), and will be unloaded tomorrow morning. Bottoms will be ground, and pots will be packed up. At 2:00 tomorrow afternoon, I’ll show up at my dad’s, haul my booth[2] out of his basement[1], and get it set up at the Arts and Culture Centre. Then a few more expeditions for pottery, with which to fill the shelves. And tiles, to hang on the walls.
And I will be ready and nervously/giddily awaiting customers come noon Wednesday.
[1] It’s been painted! It will have shelves! It has walls that can be covered in tiles! It will all work. Yes.
[2] It’s blue now. I am happy.

My name is Maaike Charron, and I'm a potter in St. John's, Newfoundland. I started fiddling around with pottery in summer 2006, when I was told volunteering in the local clay studio would get me free studio time. I mostly taught myself, spending a lot of time poring over books, magazines and websites, and occasionally pestering the more advanced (but very helpful) potters around me with questions. After about two years, I decided I'd gotten good enough to go into business for myself. This blog, started after my first big craft fair, was created to document the process of becoming a wondrously succesful craftsperson. (Or it will document How Not To Do It. We'll see.)
