Medieval Society and Food

I’ve been harking back to my university days lately. The grade 5 curriculum in Newfoundland has changed to include a section on medieval society. Roz was talking to a teacher she does Art Smarts with, and mentioned me. So I’ll be heading out to Bonavista next week to do a presentation on medieval food.

I’m having fun organizing ideas, and breaking time into chunks, and figuring out what to bring for props. I’ve got my copy of the Hours of Catherine of Cleves (pictures in non-food-related books often provide useful clues to historians re: foodstuffs and also kitchens), and today at the library I picked up a copy of the household book of Alice de Bryene (accounting! Very detailed accounting!). I might also make up some apple-based candy or something. We’ll see.
